Celebrating 27 Years as a Nurse: Making a Difference in Underserved Communities in Africa

Today, on International Nurses Day, I reflect on my incredible journey as a nurse, spanning 27 fulfilling years. Nursing has been my calling, a passion that has driven me to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals in need. In this story, I want to share my joy and gratitude for this noble profession while highlighting the remarkable work done by two charity organizations, OCMM and HTI, which I’m privileged to co-found, in improving healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities across Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

The Joys of Being a Nurse:

Being a nurse is not just a job; it is a privilege. The opportunity to care for and support patients during their most vulnerable moments is an immense honor. Over the years, I have witnessed countless instances of strength, resilience, and hope, reinforcing my passion for nursing. The ability to make a positive impact in someone’s life is truly rewarding, and it keeps me motivated every day.

One of the organizations close to my heart is OCMM (Odumehaje Christian Medical Missions), which focuses on providing comprehensive healthcare, essential services and hope to underserved communities across Nigeria. OCMM’s dedicated team of nurses, doctors, and volunteers work tirelessly to address the healthcare disparities faced by vulnerable populations in the country.

Through OCMM, I have had the opportunity to participate in medical missions in Nigeria. These missions bring healthcare professionals together to provide vital medical care, conduct health education programs, offer preventive services and share the gospel of Christ which brings hope. The experience of working alongside passionate individuals, witnessing the impact of our efforts firsthand, has been life-changing.

HTI: Helping Team International:

Another remarkable organization that has made a significant difference in healthcare across Sub- Saharan Africa is HTI (Helping Team International). HTI focuses on making holistic health interventions available, accessible, affordable and sustainable leveraging technology and innovation to enhance healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities.

Through HTI’s initiatives, we’ve carried out six free medical missions in remote communities of Nigeria and Sierra Leone within the two years of our existence. These medical missions have impacted the less privileged in the rural areas, helped to reduce the disease burden and prevention of communicable and non- communicable diseases in these communities, ensuring that quality care reaches even the most isolated regions.

Impacting Lives in Nigeria and Sierra Leone:

Nigeria and Sierra Leone are two countries that have faced substantial healthcare challenges due to limited resources, infrastructure, and political instability. However, with the support of OCMM and HTI, we have made significant strides in improving healthcare access and outcomes in these communities.

By conducting medical missions, providing vaccinations, treating infectious diseases, and offering health education, we have reached thousands of individuals who otherwise would not have had access to adequate healthcare. Our interventions have not only saved lives but also empowered communities to take charge of their health and well-being.

As I celebrate 27 years as a nurse on this International Nurses Day, I am filled with immense gratitude for the privilege of serving others. The impact made by organizations like OCMM and HTI in underserved communities across Sub- Saharan Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Sierra Leone, showcases the power of collaboration, innovation, and compassion.

The journey as a nurse has been humbling, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. It is my hope that through sharing my experiences, others will be inspired to join the nursing profession or support organizations like ours, working towards improving healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities worldwide. Together, we can continue to make a positive difference in the lives of those in need.
