There’s a difference between facts…
and truth.
The fact was:
I had sickle cell disease.
The fact was:
Pain crises were real.
Hospital visits were real.
Limitations were real.
Weakness was real.
But I learned something powerful over the years:
Facts do not always have the final word.
Because beyond medical reports…
beyond human predictions…
beyond statistics…
there is God’s truth.
And God’s truth gave me hope when fear tried to define my future.
“But He was wounded for our transgressions… and by His stripes we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5
For many people, that verse is only theology.
For me, it became a lifeline.
I believed deeply that Jesus’ suffering was not meaningless.
His wounds were for my redemption, peace, hope, and healing.
So while I acknowledged my condition responsibly, I refused to surrender my identity entirely to it.
Sickle cell became part of my story…
but not the conclusion of it.
That mindset protected me during difficult seasons.
Because if you are not careful, a diagnosis can quietly become an identity.
You stop seeing possibilities.
Stop dreaming.
Stop hoping.
Stop expecting good things.
But God never created human beings merely to become labels.
Yes, wisdom matters.
Medical care matters.
Treatment matters.
Monitoring matters.
But hope matters too.
Faith matters too.
And purpose matters deeply.
So every day, I continued declaring life over myself.
I prayed.
I keyed into the finished work of Calvary. I trusted God
I took responsibility for my health.
And I kept moving toward purpose.
Not because everything was easy…
but because I believed my future belonged to God.
Educational Nugget:
Sickle cell disease is a lifelong genetic condition, but improved medical care, early intervention, healthy lifestyle practices, emotional support, and advances in treatment have significantly improved life expectancy and quality of life for many sufferers around the world.
Pain2Gain Reflection:
A diagnosis may describe a condition…
but it does not have permission to define your destiny.
Next, we begin a new cluster of lessons… and one of them came from discovering how fear quietly grows when faith becomes weak.
